The couple resided first in Bristol, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and then by 1927 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois where Graffley was  a factory distributor  of foundation garments. Esther and Graffley had a daughter Barbara. Esther died in April 1974 at age 82. Her last known residence was Hendersonville, Henderson County, North Carolina.  In the 1900 federal census Lizzie Haworth was head of household in Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana, with her daughter Esther as well as her brother Joseph A. Pearson and sister Delphine Pearson. Her marital status was given as married, but she and Oscar were divorced. In the census for that year he was enumerated in  Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota as single, a lodger in a hotel, working as a horseshoer. By 1930, still single, he was a blacksmith in Santa Cruz County, California. He died there 24 August 1943 at age 75.

     47.  Amanda4 PENNY (Elijah3, John2, Henry1) was born 26 December 1844 in Ohio and died of chronic bronchits 3 March 1909 at age 64 in Staunton Township, Miami County, Ohio. She was buried 17 March 1909 in Riverside Cemetery, Troy, Miami County.

Amanda married Ephraim DITMER 27 February 1862 in Miami County. Ephraim, the son of Jacob and Catharine (Rank) Ditmer, was born 28 February 1842 in Union Township, Miami County.  He died of double pneumonia 11 March 1911 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 69, and was buried 13 March 1911 in Riverside Cemetery. Ephraim's brother John Rank Ditmer married Corilla Penny, Amanda’s cousin.

Known children of Amanda4 PENNY and Ephraim DITMER, all born in Union Township, Miami County, Ohio, were as follows:

172        i.    Edward A.5 DITMER was born circa 1865. His name was given as Edwin in the 1880 federal census.  He married Luvernia Warner in Miami County 29 December 1882.

173        ii.    Margaret J. DITMER was born circa 1868.

174       iii.    Florence DITMER was born in February 1870 and died 17 March 1902 in Troy, Miami County, Ohio at age 32. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Troy.                    175       iv.    Harriet DITMER, known as Hattie, was born 19 May 1874 and married Fremont C. MIKESELL in Miami County, Ohio 19 February 1895. He was born in 1862 in Ohio, the son of Simon and Elizabeth Mikesell of Pennsylvania. Hattie and Fremont were enumerated in Troy, Miami County in the 1900 federal census. He was a fruit tree salesman. Also in the household was lodger Sam Frank, born in September 1868 in Ohio. Although neither Freeman nor Hattie can be found in the 1910 census, Sam was in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, living alone, and was a saloon keeper. Hattie died in Dayton 20 October 1913 at age 39. The cause of death was given as cerebral hemorrhage due to chronic alcoholism, and interestingly Samuel Frank was listed as the informant on her death certificate. Hattie was buried 22 October 1913 in Riverside Cemetery, Troy, Miami County, Ohio.

176        v.    Frank DITMER was born circa 1877.

     50.  Harvey J.4 PENNY (Elijah3, John2, Henry1) was born in 1858 in Ohio. He married Lavinia ISENBARGER 9 October 1879 in Miami County, Ohio. Lavinia was born in 1857 in Ohio.

It is possible that this is the Harvey J.Penny who also married Ida BOYER 13 August 1887 in Miami County, Ohio.  A Goldie Penny, born 24 April 1890 in Laura was admitted to the Miami County Children's Home 4 November 1898. Records say her father Harvey abandoned the family and she was returned to her mother Ida. Goldie was then readmitted to the home, but subsequently surrendered to her grandmother in Dayton. The date of her last discharge was 20 October 1900. Additionally, Goldie's brother Harry, born 27 December 1887 in Bradford, Miami County, was admitted to the Children's Home 4 November 1898. His records say that after his father Harvey abandoned the family Harry was surrendered to his mother. Then he was readmitted to the home, but subsequently indentured to Esty Elleman of Ludlow, Ohio. He was later indentured to E.M. Pemberton of Laura, and then Elmer Esteline of Tippecanoe City. Harry was last discharged from the home 25 August 1901. Finally, Hettie, daughter of Harvey and Ida Penny, was admitted to the Children's Home 4 November 1898. Her records show she was taken on trial by J. U. Carte of West Milton, then readmitted to the home. She was subsequently surrendered to her mother, but later readmitted to the home. Finally, she was taken by her father in Troy, Ohio. Her last date of discharge was 30 June 1902. Hettie was likely Hattie Jeanettte, born 7 April 1894 in Troy, per birth records in Miami County Probate Court. Probate Court records also show a Ruth Penny born 29 March 1897 in Troy to Harvey and Ida.  Miami County Probate Records show several criminal cases against a Harvey J. Penny -- one dated 27 October 1880, another 23 January 1888 and the other 17 November 1897. There was a Habeas Corpus involving Harvey J. Penny 16 November 1892. An Ida Penny, age 41, single, born January 1859, was a boarder in the home of Hattie Furnas, age 33, in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio in 1900. This was likely the Ida (Boyer) Penny in question. Harvey J. was not found in the 1900, 1910, 1920 or 1930 census indexes.

It is known for a fact that Harvey, son of Elijah and Rachel (Miles) Penny, did marry Jennie TOWNSEND 19  February 1902 in Miami County as their names were on his marriage record. However, the record indicates that both the bride and groom had been married just once before, which if true would mean that it was a different Harvey J. Penny who married Ida Boyer. Jennie was the daughter of Amos and Minerva (Wintrow/Winterowd) Townsend, born on July 5 circa 1863 in Darke County, Ohio. In the 1870 census her name was enumerated as Barbara J.; Barbery in the 1880. As Jennie Townsend she married 26 December 1883 in Miami County Clinton F. Parks, who was born circa 1860 in Ohio. It is not known if the couple divorced or if he died; neither can be found in the 1900 federal census.

Known children of Harvey J.4 PENNY and Lavinia ISENBARGER were:

177        i.    Myrtle Pearl5 PENNY was born 3 June 1880 in Laura, Miami County, Ohio.

     52.  John Wesley4 PENNY (Richard3, John2, Henry1) was born 12 June 1837 in Ohio, and married Sarah MUCK 26 October 1865 in Miami County, Ohio.  John died of stomach cancer 14 November 1909 in Union Township, Miami County at age 72, and was buried 16 November 1909 in Old Ludlow Cemetery, Laura, Miami County.

Sarah, John’s wife, was born 18 September 1844 in Union, Montgomery County, Ohio, the daughter of Samuel Jacob and Anna Christiana (Smith) Muck of Pennsylvania.  She died of pneumonia with the contributing cause of breast cancer 19 October 1932 in Franklin Township, Darke County, Ohio at age 88, and was buried 22 October 1932 in Old Ludlow Cemetery.

Known children of John Wesley4 PENNY and Sarah MUCK, all born in Darke County, Ohio, were as follows (out of birth order):

179        ii.    Oscar J. PENNY was born 21 January 1869 and died 7 June 1888 in Darke County at age 19. He was buried in Old Ludlow Cemetery, Laura, Miami County, Ohio

180       iii.    Anna Christiana PENNY was born 23 November 1871 and died 7 August 1949 in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan at age 77. She married Jacob Lincoln SCHNECK, the son of John and Bessie Schneck, 19 January 1888 in Darke County, Ohio. Jacob was born 28 November 1868 in Darke County and died 29 October 1945 at age 76 in Flint. The couple had sons John Wesley, born 21 January 1889 in Darke County and died 4 May 1949 in Flint at age 49 who married first Ada Loretta PANSING 19 December 1908 in Montgomery County, Ohio, married second Ruth [--?--] circa 1915, and married third Mabel Lorraine BRACEWELL 15 April 1931 in Flint; Scott Winfield, born 8 June 1892 in Laura, Miami County, Ohio and died 2 December 1972 at age 80 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio who married Cora Ellen [--?--] circa 1921 in Dayton; Glen Oscar, born 9 December 1894 in Brookville, Montgomery County, Ohio and married Evelyn E. LEIGHTON circa 1925; and Burlen Clyde, born 9 August 1896 in Brookville who married Cleora BUELL 17 January 1920 in Flint. Some time between 1900 and 1910 Jacob and Anna divorced and in the 1910 federal census he and son Scott were enumerated in Richwood, Nicholas County, West Virginia. Anna cannot be found in the 1910 census, but by 1920  she resided in Dayton with sons Scott and Glen; her marital status given as widowed. Jacob, a sewing machine salesman, was enumerated with wife Jennie Long in Trenton, Butler County, Ohio. Jennie was the daughter of Elias and Phoebe A. (Gardner) Long. She died 1 January 1926 in Trenton and her death certificate, on which Jacob was the informant, gives her age as around 65, with no specific dates. Census records for 1860 and 1860 give her approximate date of birth as 1855. Jacob and Anna presumably remarried as they were together in the 1930 census in that city. In 1932 at the time of her mother's death, Anna, and presumably Jacob, were in Clio, Genesee County, Michigan.

181       iv.    Robert L. PENNY was born 12 October 1872 and died 6 December 1872 in Darke County.  He was buried in Old Ludlow Cemetery, Laura.

     60.  Elmira4 PENNY (John3, John2, Henry1) was born 13 May 1837 in Monroe Township, Darke County, Ohio and died between 1910 and 1920, probably in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana.  She married Elam BURCH 2 October 1852 in Miami County.

Elam was born in 1833 in Franklin Township, Darke County, Ohio, the son of Charles and Sophia (Jay) Burch, he of Kentucky and she of South Carolina. Elam died 18 October 1895 at age 62 in Latty, Paulding County, Ohio.

Known children of Elmira4 PENNY and Elam BURCH were as follows:

216        i.    Sarah S.5 BURCH was born 28 February 1867 according to her death certificate, and 31 January 1865 according to her marriage record, but she was aged 13 in the 1870 federal census (circa 1857) and 23 in the 1880 census. It would appear that in later censuses she shaved off a few years, perhaps because her second husband was born in 1873 and she did not want to acknowledge such a large age gap between them. Sarah married first Anson PEARSON 8 July 1876 in Darke County, Ohio. Anson was born in December 1845 in Ohio and was the son of Abel Insco and Sarah (Coppock Waymire) Pearson and brother of Margaret Pearson, the second wife of Thomas W. Penny, Sarah's second cousin once removed. It would appear that Sarah and Anson divorced, as she was not in his household in the 1900 census, and was remarried in 1901. Her second husband was James Elmer RILEY, son of James and Hannah (Dickenson) Riley, who was born 25 December 1873 in Van Wert County, Ohio and died of prostate cancer in that county 21 January 1941 at age 67.  He remarried after Sarah died of angina pectoris 17 April 1934 in Van Wert County at age '67' (actually 77). Both Sarah and Elmer, as he was known, were buried in Ridge Cemetery, Van Wert County. Sarah and Anson had children Minnie, born circa 1877; Rollin E., born 19 May 1879 and died of an abcess of the liver and base of the right lung 7 July 1919 in Van Wert at age 40, who was buried 9 July 1919 in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert County; Isaac W., born 6 January 1879 and died of an aortic aneurysm 1 September 1953 in Van Wert at age 73, who was buried 3 September 1953 in Woodland Cemetery. (Isaac's age at death would make his date of birth January 1880, eight months after Rollin's birth, not four months before.); and Amie, born circa 1881. In the 1880 federal census the family was in Franklin Township, Darke County, Ohio, two doors away from Sarah’s father and mother, but by 1900 the family, minus Sarah, had moved to Marseilles, Wyandot County, Ohio and lived a short distance from Sarah’s brother Tobias’ family. In 1910 Anson was listed as single, age 65, a boarder in the household of Marilla Waymire in Newton Township, Miami County, Ohio. Anson died 18 September 1923 in Toledo State Hospital, Lucas County, Ohio of senility and chronic valvular heart disease and was buried 16 September 1923 in Van Wert, Ohio. His surname on his death certificate was spelled Pierson.

217        ii.    Harvey BURCH was born circa 1862 in Ohio.

218       iii.    Maurice Allen BURCH was born 8 August 1864 in Ohio. His name has also been seen spelled Morris. He married 15 October 1895 in Paulding County, Ohio Amanda Elenora LONG who was born 22 June 1874 in that state. Their known children were Perry Earl, born 16 July 1896 and died 18 February 1972 in Kosciusko County, Indiana at age 75, who married Sarah Catherine TREVEY 27 November 1919 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana; Mary Manilla, born 8 November 1900; Glenn Carlton, born 22 February 1903; Gladys Bernice, born 7 March 1905 and died 12 March 1975 in California who married Merrill DORNICK 29 March 1926 in Allen County; Hazel May, born 28 February 1907 and married Joseph Leonard ADAMS 19 October 1925 in Allen County; Dorothy Pauline, born 15 March 1910 and died 24 December 195 at age 5; Ethel E., born circa 1913; and Estella Lucille, born 13 August 1916 and married Robert Leonard GOLDSMITH 26 February 1933 in Allen County. Maurice died 4 February 1953 in San Bernardino County,California at age 88.

+   219       iv.    Tobias Criber BURCH, born 10 January 1867 in Darke County, Ohio; married Irena Melinda WOOTEN.

220        v.    Rosanna BURCH was born 18 January 1870 in Franklin Township, Darke County, Ohio and married Alonzo P. REICHARD 17 May 1888 in Darke County. Alonzo, the son of Isaac and Sarah (Garland) Reichard, was born 28 January 1865 in Mississinawa Township, Darke County, Ohio. BRAGG 30 May 1911 in Darke County, they divorced by 1920, and he married second Madge [--?--]; Naomi, born 10 May 1893 and died 15 February 1970 in Van Wert County, Ohio at age 76 who married Elsworth A. DAVIS 25 July 1925 in Allen County, Indiana; and Nora A., born in March 1898. By 1910, Alonzo was remarried for seven years to Dora O. [--?--], born circa 1872 in Indiana, the second marriage for both, and the couple was residing in Helena Township, Antrim County, Michigan. In the household were Clark and Nora, as well as two children of Alonzo and Dora: Nellie G., age 5; and Zella, age 2. Alonzo died in 1955 at age 90 and was buried in Woodland Union Cemetery, Van Wert County, Ohio.

221       vi.    Hattie BURCH was born circa 1875 in Darke County, Ohio and married Eugene LABERDY 23 February 1891 in Paulding County, Ohio.

Liberty married Sarah Ann GRAHAM, daughter of William and Mary Ann (Addington) Graham, 12 May 1859 in Pitsburg, Darke County, Ohio.  (Mary Ann Addington Graham married second Thomas W. Penny, Liberty’s second cousin.) Sarah Ann was born 26 April 1843 in Osceola, St. Clair County, Missouri.  She died of uremia 29 January 1916 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 72, and was buried 1 February 1916 in Old Ludlow Cemetery.

Liberty was for a time a farmer, however in 1901 he supposedly bought the property at 406 South Main Street in Laura from Riley Wintrow, his first cousin once removed, and moved the buildings on the lot back a few feet, dug a cellar under the house to the north, and established the Penny Bakery. It is not known how long the bakery was in operation, but by 1910 the family lived in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. The 1910 federal census noted that Sarah had 15 children, 8 living.  Her obituary confirmed she had 15 children - 11 daughters and 4 sons. At death she had 7 surviving daughters and her obituary named five: Miss Osa Penny, Mrs. Pat Sullivan, Mrs. Will Paff, Mrs. Clark Sullivan and Mrs. Cora Russell.

The 15 children of Liberty S.4 PENNY and Sarah Ann GRAHAM were as follows:

On 12 May 1909 in Montgomery County, Ohio Cora married Harvey RUSSELL, the son of David and Katherine (Crider) Russell. He was born in 1876 in Ohio and died in 1961 at age 85. In the 1930 federal census Harvey, Cora and daughter Sarah C. lived in Davidson County, Tennessee. Sarah was born circa 1912 in Ohio, and she had an older brother Richard G. born in 1910 who died in 1930 at age 20. He was buried in Old Ludlow Cemetery, Laura, Miami County, Ohio.

230       ix.    Ola PENNY, twin sister to Osa, was born 7 April 1879 in Franklin Township, Darke County, Ohio.  She died of a coronary occlusion 15 December 1944 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio at age 65, and was buried 17 December 1944 in Old Ludlow Cemetery, Laura, Miami County, Ohio. Ola married William Samuel GUNCKEL 29 March 1907 and they had a son Thomas L. who was born 24 October 1910 and died 11 June 1974 at age 63. William was born 23 January 1880 in Germantown, Montgomery County, Ohio, the son of Lemuel and Rachel (Bailey) Gunckel, and was an accountant for the city of Dayton, per the 1920 census. He and Ola divorced and in 1930 William was a bank auditor in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, while Ola and son Thomas lived with her twin sister Osa and her husband in Dayton. Ola gave her marriage status as widow, not divorced. In addition, she and her sister gave their ages as 40 rather than 50. William died of toxemia due to colon cancer 13 July 1949 at age 69 in Cincinnati. He was buried in Germantown Cemetery 16 July 1949.

He was born 19 November 1899 in Montgomery County, Ohio, the son of John H. and Arnolda E. (Raabe) Rohlfs, and was a student at Wittenberg College when he registered for the World War I draft in 1917. Interestingly Osa and her twin sister Ola gave their ages as 40 in the 1930 census, when they actually should have been 50. It might be possible that Irwin, too, lied about his age, making himself older in that census – 39, rather than 29. Irwin, no matter his true age, was in 1930 an assistant county prosecutor. Osa served two terms in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1924-1928. A Republican, she was the first woman from Montgomery County to serve in the Ohio General Assembly. She died of atherosclerosis, acute coronary dilatation 31 December 1950 in Ohio at age 71, and was buried 3 January 1951 in Old Ludlow Cemetery, Laura under the surname Penny.
