2. John2 PENNY (Henry1) died 1 March 1864 in Union
Township, Miami
County, Ohio at age 84 years, 5
months and 25 days making his birth date 5 September 1779 in South Carolina. He was buried in Old Ludlow Cemetery, Laura, Miami County.
In his will, dated 17 March 1862 and probated 5 March 1864 in Miami County,
John left son Thomas $10 in addition to what he had already been given, which
likely was the home farm. Son Elijah received $100 in addition to what he had
been given, also likely land. Son John Penny, Jr. received the east half of 60
acres of land east of the Christian Church (on the site of Old Ludlow Cemetery in Laura)
and west of the home farm owned by son Thomas which contained six acres. The
balance of the proceeds, both real and personal, after payment of debts was to
be divided equally among daughters Susannah Jones, Sarah Hayworth [sic] and
Esther Hayworth [sic], and sons Richard and Elisha. Allen H. Davis, a friend,
was appointed executor of the estate, and Robert Wright and William S. Welsh
were witnesses to the will.
John married Esther THOMPSON, a Quaker,
circa 1801 in Union County,
South Carolina. In the Cane Creek
Monthly Meeting South Carolina records for 18 April 1801 was listed: PENNY,
Esther (form. Thompson) dis mou. "Dis mou" is an abbreviation for
"disowned married out of unity," which confirms the fact that the
Pennys were not Quaker but did marry Quakers and were involved with that community.
Esther was born 1 March 1785 in South
Carolina. Her parents were Richard and Susannah
(Steadham) Thompson. She died 5 December
1860 in Miami County, Ohio
at age 75, and was buried in Old
Ludlow Cemetery.
On 10 March 1802 Henry Thickpenny bought
100 acres of land from Thomas Lamb, Sr., on a branch of the Tyger River
in Union
County, South Carolina.
That same acreage was conveyed to John Thickpenny (ie. John Penny) 7 January
1804 by Sheriff William Rice. John, as John Thickpenny, then sold this property
on 19 October 1805 to John Gray. From this information it is possible to
surmise that patriarch Henry had departed South Carolina by January 1804. John and his
family did not follow until after October 1805 and he first appeared on the tax
rolls for Ohio County, Kentucky in 1807 as John Penny. He was last
found on the tax rolls there in March 1809. John’s father Henry and brothers Thomas
and James were on the 1810 federal census in Ohio County, Kentucky,
however John was not, and cannot be found in the census index. It is not known
if he was just missed by the census enumerator or was by that time on his way
to Miami County, Ohio. The first concrete evidence of his
presence in that county was a 1 June 1818 purchase of land in Union Township,
Section 11, Range 4, Township 7.

Esther THOMPSON were as follows:

Ludlow Cemetery,
Laura, Miami County, Ohio
Thomas married Christiana HUNT, daughter of
Ralph and Rachel (Campbell) Hunt, 22 October
1807 in Ohio County, Kentucky.
In the absence of her father, Henry Penny made an oath that Christiana was
over 21 years of age. Christiana was born 6 October 1779 in South
Carolina and died 20 January 1857 in Darke County, Ohio
at age 77 years, 3 months and 14 days.
She was buried in Old Ludlow Cemetery.
Christiana, a Quaker, was disowned from the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, Union County, South
Carolina on 20 June 1801. The cause was not stated.
Her father Ralph was born circa 1740, probably in New Jersey. After his wife Rachel died 18
March 1790 in South Carolina
he married Mary Cook 3 January 1793. Ralph died in 1803 in South Carolina. In the mass migration of
Quakers from South Carolina
northward, several of Ralph’s and Rachel’s children moved to Warren County,
Ohio. At least two sons, Ralph, Jr. and Isaiah, and daughter Christina went to Ohio County, Kentucky.
Thomas Penny was first found on the property
tax rolls for Ohio County, Kentucky on 30 July 1808 with 100 acres on a
fork of Long Falls Creek. The 1810 federal census for Ohio
County showed him with a
wife and 3 young sons, and he remained on Ohio County
tax rolls through 1814. By 1820 he and
his family were in Union Township, Miami
County, Ohio.
Known children of Thomas2 PENNY and
Christiana HUNT, both born in Ohio
County, Kentucky,
were as follows:
+ 14 i. John F.3 PENNY, born
18 June 1808; married Mariah MCCLAIN.
+ 15 ii. Henry PENNY, born circa 1809; married Agnes
MARCUM.
Based on census records Thomas and
Christiana likely had at least one additional son and two additional daughters.
Those children
have not as yet been identified.

October 1804 in South Carolina

He died 15 May 1899 at age 77 in Miami County, and was buried in Union

Ester, age 7, relationship unknown. In the 1870 census for Newton Township,
Samuel, Eliza and his mother Anna Emery, age 89, widow, born in South Carolina
were in
the same household. Eliza and Samuel had no known children.
According to "The History of Laura," Samuel and Eliza purchased the lot

unusual brick house featuring a two-story bay window. After they both
died their heirs held the largest public sale of land in Laura's

In Marriage Records, 1807-1865, Miami County,

Thomas married second 9 February 1831 Susannah
HAWORTH who was born 4 February 1812 in Ohio,

County, Ohio in 1806.
They had 16 children. Susannah’s brother John Haworth married Sarah Penny (see # 8 below) and
