James Henry served in the Civil War in the 192nd Regiment, Company I, Ohio Volunteer Infantry from 14 February 1865 until 1 September 1865.  The war ended in April 1865 so he very likely did not see service in battle.  In the regiment’s book James is described as 6’1” tall, with a dark complexion, gray eyes and dark hair.  On 25 November 1889 James executed a Declaration for an Original Invalid Pension that stated that while a member of the infantry and in the line of duty at Winchester, Virginia, on or about 1 May 1865, “from exposure and cold and hard service he contracted catarrh of head.  Also at the same time and place contracted piles.  Now claims pension for said catarrh of head and disease of head and eyes, result of said catarrh of head.  Also at Winchester, Virginia, about June 1865 from vaccination from impure virus he contracted blood poisoning and disease of left arm and loss of use of left thumb.”  At various times in his life James worked as a shoemaker, a farmer and a day laborer.

He married Mary Jane SAPP 25 November 1852 in Bellefontaine, Logan County, Ohio. She was born 11 June 1832 in Mt. Vernon, Knox County, Ohio, and died 24 February 1905 at age 72 in Springhills, Champaign County.  She was buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery.  Mary’s parents were Absalom and Mary Apt (Krouskop) Sapp.  Absalom, a millwright, died before 1850, and his wife Mary, who was born in 1805 in Delaware County, New York, died 19 September 1866 in Logan County , Ohio.

121          ii.     Mary E. VANCE was born 23 September 1855 in Logan County, Ohio and married Benjamin Franklin LOOKER 3 March 1881 in Champaign County, Ohio. Benjamin was the son of Gibson R. and Eleanor ‘Ellen’ Sarah (Blackford) Looker and was born in January 1845 in Palestine, Darke County, Ohio. He died at age 61 on 22 January 1906 in Middletown, Butler County, Ohio. Benjamin married first Sarah A. Wooley in Shelby County 29 January 1870. As B.F. Looker he also married Margaret Collins 10 November 1870 in Shelby County. Mary and Benjamin had children Blanche, born 16 September 1882 in Springhills, Champaign County who married Lewis M. In 1900 the family resided in Bellefontaine, Logan County, Ohio, a few houses from Mary’s aunt Francinah Costin and her family and Mary’s uncle Zohar Sapp.

122        iii.     Franconia Vance was born circa 1857 in Logan County, Ohio, and died before 1870.

+          123         iv.     John Clarence VANCE, born 25 December 1859 in Logan County , Ohio; married first Emaline JULIAN; married second Nettie F. FULLER.

124          v.     Olive C. VANCE was born 22 March 1868 in Harrison Township, Champaign County, Ohio, and married Augustus W. SHELKETT 21 April 1883 in Champaign County.  He was born 23 September 1842 in Virginia, based on his age at death in Springhills, Champaign County on 16 January 1894 of 51 years, 3 months and 22 days.  Augustus served as a private in Company G., 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War, enlisting 4 August 1862. He was absent without leave from 15 January 1863, and by 30 April 1863 was listed as a deserter. It is not known what action was taken against him as a result. In the 1870 federal census Augustus was enumerated in the household of Barnhart/Barnard Kepner and wife Matilda J. who was a widow of Reuben Barnes, killed in the Civil War. In the household were her seven children including 20-year-old daughter Justina Barnes.  Augustus and Justina had a son Antrim Earl, born out of wedlock 22 August 1874. This child was in the 1880 census for Fall Creek, Hamilton County, Indiana living with ‘Barney’ and Jane Kepner, his grandmother. His name was enumerated as ‘Anthom Schocket.” At some point Antrim dropped his father’s surname and became Antrim Barnes, possibly in 1880 when his grandmother died and he returned to Coesse, Whitely County, Indiana to live with his mother who had married James Graves in 1877. Antrim lived most of his adult life in Montana.  It would appear that Augustus returned to Champaign County around 1874-1876; certainly before the 1880 census for Harrison Township in that county where he was listed as single and working as a farmer. Augustus and Olive had two sons. Joseph Spencer Shelkett was born 2 June 1883 in Champaign County. He cannot be located in the 1900 and 1910 censuses, but by the time he registered for the draft in 1917 he was residing in Benewah County, Idaho. In the 1920 federal census he was enumerated in St. Marie Precinct, Shoshone County, Idaho, and in 1930 was still single and in Idaho, residing in Helmer Precinct, Latah County. Gilbert Clarence Shelkett was born 5 June 1888 in Champaign County. He, also, cannot be located in the 1900 and 1910 censuses, but 17 June 1914 he married Stella May ALLEN in Ellsworth County, Kansas. Stella was born 13 May 1891 in that county, the daughter of Charles W. and Dorothy Ann (Carney) Allen. The couple had children Clarence Allen, born 1 October 1915 in Ellsworth County and died in that county 10 July 1981 at age 65; Dorothy Virginia, born 3 June 1917 in Ellsworth County, who married Steve TRUHLAR, Jr. 14 September 1937 in that county and died there 10 March 1983 at age 65; and Robert, known as Bobby, born 14 November 1922 in Ellsworth County and died 9 August 1938 at age 15. Olive married second 7 June 1894 in Champaign County James H. STOUT who was born circa 1862 in Ohio, the son of Cornelius and Anna (Brennan) Stout. James and Olive cannot be located in the 1900 census or beyond.

He was born 19 January 1853 in Logan County, Ohio, the son of Andrew Carothers and Sarah Jane (McFarland) Huston. In the 1900 federal census Robert was enumerated in the County Hospital Poor Farm in Arvilla Township, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, married 12 years; however, Cora was not with him. His nephew Joseph Shelkett in the World War I draft registration in 1917 named his uncle Robert Huston as his nearest relative . Joseph was in Benewah County, Idaho and Robert was in Lansford, Bottineau County, North Dakota.
