     397.  Pearl Alice7 LOOKER (Mary E.6 Vance, Mary Jane5 Sapp, Mary Apt4 Krouskop, George3, Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born 8 August 1892 in Blackford County, Indiana. She died of a puerperal hemorrhage giving birth 23 July 1920 in Middletown, Butler County, Ohio at age 27. The child, Thomas B., was stillborn. Pearl was buried 27 July 1920 in Woodside Cemetery in Middletown.

     On 8 August 1907 in Butler County Pearl married Guy Chester COWGILL, the son of Thomas Jefferson and Sarah Ann (Bowers) Cowgill, who was born 12 March 1883 in Springboro, Warren County, Ohio. He died 5 November 1957 in Butler County at age 74, and was buried in Woodside Cemetery. Guy was a paper maker in a paper mill.

               544       i.    Chester Albert8 COWGILL was born 10 December 1908. He died 24 May 1985 in Butler County, Ohio at age 76, and was buried in Woodside Cemetery, Middletown, Butler County.

               545      ii.    Lawrence E. COWGILL was born 10 October 1910 and died of a cerebral hemorrhage 18 August 1916 in Middletown, Butler County, Ohio at age 5. He was buried 19 August 1916 in Woodside Cemetery, Middletown.

               546      iii.    Hazel Mary COWGILL was born and died 6 January 1913. The cause of death was stillborn due to delayed labor. She was buried 8 January 1913 in Woodside Cemetery, Middletown, Butler County, Ohio

               547     iv.    Eva May COWGILL was born 26 May 1914 and died of acute broncho pneumonia 4 March 1915 in Middletown, Butler County, Ohio. She was buried 6 March 1915 in Woodside Cemetery, Middletown.

               548      v.    Ethel COWGILL was born circa 1915 and appeared on the census of 1940 in Lemon Township, Butler County, Ohio with her widowed father.

               549     vi.    Raymond COWGILL was born 12 May 1918. He died 29 August 1978 in Middletown, Butler County, Ohio at age 60.

               550    vii.    Thomas B. COWGILL was born and died 23 July 1920. He was buried 27 July 1920 in Woodside Cemetery, Middletown, Butler County, Ohio.

 

     399.  Estella Mae7 VANCE (John Clarence6, Mary Jane5 Sapp, Mary Apt4 Krouskop, George3, Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born 17 June 1881 in Harrison Township, Champaign County, Ohio. She died 17 April 1948 in Troy, Miami County, Ohio at age 66. The cause of death was acute hepatitis, chronic interstitial nephritis and chronic deforming arthritis. Estella was buried 20 April 1948 in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township, Miami County.

     Estella was indentured as a servant at age 14 to Benjamin Pearson, the grandfather of her future husband Estie Clyde PEARSON whom she married 17 May 1898 in Kentucky. Clyde, as he was known, was born 14 August 1878 in Monroe Township, Miami County, the son of Davis and Deborah (Davis) Pearson, and died 18 July 1965 in Miami County at age 86. He was buried 21 July 1965 in Curtis Cemetery.

               551       i.    Lottie Mae8 PEARSON was born 19 February 1899 and died 31 December 1980 in Union Township, Miami County, Ohio at age 81. She was buried in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township. On 21 April 1921 in Miami County Lottie  married Russell Curtis SHEARER, the son of Cornelius and Mary E. (Curtis) Shearer, who was born 25 April 1894 in Montgomery County, Ohio and died at age 71 on 27 October 1965 in Union Township. He was buried in Curtis Cemetery. The couple had a daughter Pauline Lucille who was born 26 June 1922 in Miami County and died 23 March 1969 in West Milton, Miami County at age 46. She married Herman Duane KAUFFMAN, the son of Jesse W. and Glenna Elizabeth (Schelley) Kauffman, 18 October 1941. He was born 1 March 1921 in Miami County and died there 11 April 1995 at age 74. Pauline and Herman were buried in Curtis Cemetery. They had three daughters.

               552      ii.    Edna Ozella PEARSON, was born 24 May 1901 and married Paul SMITH, the son of Orrin Blaine and Gertrude G. (Genslinger) Smith, 28 August 1924 in Miami County, Ohio. He was born 12 June 1902 in Casstown, Miami County. The couple had two sons and divorced between 1927 and 1930. Paul remarried and died 1 November 1999 in Miami County at age 97. Edna died 20 July 1985 at age 84, and was buried in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township, Miami County.

               553      iii.    Charles Arthur PEARSON, known as Bob, was born 4 February 1903 and died 13 January 1971 at age 67 in Troy, Miami County, Ohio. On 15 March 1924 in Miami County he married Eunice Mary PIERCE, the daughter of Walter Clarence and Lois (Taber) Pierce, who was born 7 November 1906 in Concord Township, Miami County. She died 20 January 1997 at age 90 and was buried with Charles in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Hill, Miami County. Among the couple’s four children were daughter Margaret Lucille, born 9 May 1927 and died 11 April 2008 in Montgomery County, Ohio at age 80, who married Robert F. MARQUIS; and Douglas Gene, born 28 July 1928 and died 3 December 1985 in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois at age 57.

               554     iv.    Clara Fayetta PEARSON, who went by the name Fayetta or Faye, was born 29 September 1904 and married first Floyd BAKER 19 January 1938 in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky. Floyd, the son of Orville and Florence (Becker) Baker, was born 24 August 1902 in Ohio and died in Englewood, Montgomery County, Ohio 18 November 1943 at age 41. His death of carbon monoxide poisoning was ruled a suicide. Floyd was buried 21 November 1943 in Fairview Cemetery in Englewood. Faye married second Frederick W. TEBBE, Jr., the son of Frederick W., Sr., and Charlotte (Peters) Tebbe, who was born 31 March 1903 in Illinois and was enumerated in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses in St. Joseph, Berrien County, Michigan. He married first Anne Margaret Timmreck 22 April 1930 in Berrien County.  Fred died 26 January 1963 in Ohio at age 59, and was buried in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township, Miami County, Ohio. Fay died 27 January 1984 in Ohio at age 79, and was buried in Curtis Cemetery.

               555      v.    Verna Elizabeth PEARSON was born 9 July 1907 and married first in May 1927 in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky John William STINE, the son of James F. and Emma J. (Hebb) Stine. Born 1 August 1907 in Miami County, Ohio he died 25 July 1975 in Troy, Miami County at age 67, and was buried in Miami Memorial Park, Covington, Miami County. The couple had a son Lee Wendell, born 2 April 1929 in Montgomery County, Ohio and died there 20 February 2008 at age 78, who married Phyllis Jean BOATMAN; as well as five other children. Verna married second Clarence M. BRUBAKER who was born 13 June 1908 in Ohio and died in Troy 1 December 1999 at age 91. His first wife was Jennie M. Sherick and they were buried together in New Carlisle Cemetery, New Carlisle, Clark County, Ohio. Verna died 9 February 2002 in Covington at age 94.

               556     vi.    Forrest Orville PEARSON was born 16 August 1912 and married first 7 February 1937 in Miami County, Ohio Erma Myrtle HONEYMAN, the daughter of Warren E. and Anna G. (Sayers) Honeyman, who was born 28 May 1914 in Miami County and died of post-operative pelvic peritonitis in Troy, Miami County 3 June 1937 at age 23. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Troy.  Spike, as he was called, married second Helen J. MANNING 11 November 1937 in Miami County. Helen was born 29 January 1919 in that county, the daughter of Fred A. and Mable G. (Beemer) Manning. The couple had two children and divorced and Spike married third Betty M. MCCONNAUGHEY 3 May 1952 in Tipp City, Miami County. Betty was born 26 November 1928 in Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio, the daughter of Elza E. and Myrtie M. (Cloyd) McConnaughey, and died in Troy 29 September 1990 at age 61. Forrest died 11 May 1986 at age 73, and was buried in Forest Hills Cemetery, Vandalia, Montgomery County, Ohio. Forrest and Betty had four children.

               557    vii.    Harold Robert PEARSON was born 26 May 1914 and died 17 January 1983 in Miami County , Ohio at age 68. He was buried 20 January 1983 in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township, Miami County. Harold married 11 June 1932 in Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky Mary Kathryn STEWART who was the daughter of William and Etta G. (Marsh) Stewart. She was born 29 May 1915 in Miami County and died there 16 December 2004 at age 89. Mary was buried in Curtis Cemetery. The couple had five children.

               558    viii.    Ruth Lorene PEARSON was born 3 August 1918. She died 27 November 1985 in Miami County, Ohio at age 67, and was buried in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township, Miami County. Ruth married Irwin William GIERHART, the son of William H. and Bessie L. (Amerine) Gierhart, who was born 31 December 1906 in Licking County, Ohio. The couple divorced and he died 10 November 1984 in Ashland County, Ohio at age 77. Irwin was buried in Pataskala Cemetery, Licking County with his first wife Josephine Lenora (Stump) Gierhart. Ruth and Irwin had no children.

               559     ix.    Roger Lee PEARSON was born 23 December 1919 and married 4 August 1941 in Greenup County, Kentucky Martha Louise PENSYL, the daughter of Jesse A. and Bertha E. (Setty) Pensyl. She was born 17 June 1926 in Champaign County, Ohio. Roger died 28 February 1995 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio at age 75, and was buried in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township, Miami County, Ohio. The couple had four children.

               560      x.    Leroy PEARSON was born in 1906 and died age six months.

               561     xi.    Margaret PEARSON was born in 1908.  She died age three days.

 

     400.  Mellie Grace7 VANCE (John Clarence6, Mary Jane5 Sapp, Mary Apt4 Krouskop, George3, Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born 1 August 1882 in Springhills, Champaign County, Ohio. She died 19 February 1950 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 67. The cause of death was pulmonal thrombosis. She had had a hernia operation due to a partial bowel obstruction and died in St. Elizabeth Hospital. Mellie was buried 22 February 1950 in Forest Hill Union Cemetery, Piqua, Miami County, Ohio.

     Mellie was admitted to the Miami County Children's Home 12 June 1894. Comments on her record state that her father John C. Vance was living in Piqua and her mother was dead. She was taken on trial by G. H. Antonides of Tippecanoe City and indentured by him. She then was taken on trial by John Pearson of Tippecanoe City and indentured by him. She was taken on trial by Albert Hornbeck, Tippecanoe City, but no indenture was mentioned. Finally, she was taken on trial by John T. Knoop, Troy, and then discharged from the Children's Home 14 March 1898 and transferred to her father in West Virginia.

      Mellie married first 27 September 1901 in Miami County William H. PEARSON, the son of Elihu and Eliza O. (Macy) Pearson, who was born 12 September 1869 in Miami County. The marriage was short-lived and she married second Grant H. CRAIG 1 August 1903 in Montgomery County, Ohio. Grant was born 22 September 1873 in Rising Sun, Ohio County, Indiana, the son of William and Rebecca (Sloan) Craig and brother of Frank Craig who married Mellie’s sister Learna Ellen (see #403 below). She and Grant were enumerated in the 1910 federal census in Troy, Miami County where Grant worked as a laborer in a cemetery. The couple was listed in the 1911-1912 Piqua and Troy Directory, but by 1920 were divorced and Mellie was in East Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Grant had returned to Ohio County, Indiana and was living with his widowed mother and siblings. Mellie sent a postcard picturing her son Norman in his kiddie car, dated 11 August 1921 and postmarked Cleveland, Ohio. In it she says she was going to Ellen's [her sister Learna Ellen] on 20 August and then to Detroit, Michigan for at least a year. Per the November obituary of her half-sister Edna Marie, Mellie, or Nellie as it was written, was living in Deshler, Henry County, Ohio as were her sisters Mary and Learna. She appeared on the census of 1940 in Maumee, Lucas County, Ohio and was living in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio at the time of father's death in July 1943.

      Grant remained in Randolph Township, Ohio County, Indiana and died after 1940.

     401.  Bessie Florence7 VANCE (John Clarence6, Mary Jane5 Sapp, Mary Apt4 Krouskop, George3, Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born 3 November 1883 in Springhills, Champaign County, Ohio and died 30 January 1963 in Troy, Miami County, Ohio at age 79. The cause of death was rectosigmoidal intestinal obstruction. She was buried 2 February 1963 in Harris Creek Cemetery, Newberry Township, Miami County.

     Bessie was admitted to the Miami County Children’s Home 12 June 1894 and was taken on trial by Sarah S. Smith of Conover in Miami County. She was then taken on trail by John S. Routson of Bloomer, Miami County and indentured to him. Bessie was discharged from the Children's Home 2 February 1896.

     On 3 May 1903 in Miami County Bessie married Christian Adam COOK, the son of Ezra Oliver and Sarah (Stiver) Cook, who was born 21 April 1875 in Farmersville, Montgomery County, Ohio. He died in 1958 in Miami County at age 83, and was buried in Harris Creek Cemetery.

               563       i.    Theodore Clifford8 COOK was born 28 November 1903 in Shelby County, Ohio and died 22 February 1999 in Montgomery County, Ohio at age 95. He married first in 1926 Goldie M. ROOT, the daughter of Cornelius M. and Jennie E. (Slyder) Root, who was born in August 1898 in Jackson Township, Montgomery County. She died 13 March 1965 in Dayton, Montgomery County at age 66, and was buried in Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria, Preble County, Ohio. Theodore married second Velma M. KARNS, the daughter of Alva Leroy and Ida Odessa (Bridges) Karns. She was born 4 October 1912 in Ohio and died 16 August 2006 at age 93 in Dayton. Theodore and Goldie had three children.

               564      ii.    Carl Anderson COOK was born 11 April 1905 in Montgomery County, Ohio. He died 21 December 1973 in Tipp City, Miami County, Ohio at age 68, and was buried 23 December 1973 in Harris Creek Cemetery, Newberry Township, Miami County. On 19 April 1930 in Miami County Carl married first Helen Irene GRISE, the daughter of Reuben and Bertha (Fessler) Grise, who was born 17 August 1906 in Adams Township, Darke County, Ohio. She died of congestive heart failure 20 September 1945 in Piqua, Miami County at age 39, and was buried 23 September 1945 in Harris Creek Cemetery. The couple had a daughter. Carl married second Marian M. MACY, the daughter of Arthur H. and Anna M. (Eidemiller) Macy, who was married previously to [--?--] Snell. She was born 4 September 1910 in Montgomery County and died 18 June 1970 at age 59 in Troy, Miami County. Marian was buried in Harris Creek Cemetery.

               565      iii.    Viola Marie COOK was born 7 January 1907 in Ohio and married Jean Pearl MILLER 11 April 1936. He was born 22 October 1908, the son of James G. Miller who was widowed by 1910. Jean, a welder, died 20 August 1973 in Miami County, Ohio at age 64, and was buried in Fletcher Cemetery, Fletcher, Miami County. Viola died 28 August 1978 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 71. She was buried in Fletcher Cemetery. Viola and Jean had four children.

               566     iv.    Ezra Oliver COOK was born 2 December 1908 in Shelby County, Ohio and died of a heart attack 26 April 1974 at age 65 in Miami County, Ohio. He was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Versailles, Darke County, Ohio. In 1929 Ezra married Emma F. BURNS, the daughter of Jacob C. and Mary (Schrader) Burns, who was born 28 July 1909 in Adams Township, Darke County and died 20 January 1995 at age 85. She was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery. The couple had three children.

               567      v.    Sarah Florence COOK was born 15 December 1910 in Miami County, Ohio. She married first William ‘Bill’ SCANLON and had a son Donald Lee, born 11 September 1934 and died 5 December 1968 at age 34. He was buried in Davids Cemetery, Kettering, Montgomery County. Sarah married second circa 1935 Edward MCMANUS who was born circa 1901 in Indiana. They had a daughter Sally Ann born 18 April 1936 in Dayton, Montgomery County who married Richard MURCHLAND and died 22 January 2005 at age 68 in Dayton. Sarah later married Harry MEYER. She died in Montgomery County 20 July 1994 at age 83, and was buried 23 July 1994 in Harris Creek Cemetery, Newberry Township, Miami County.

               568     vi.    Irene Alice COOK was born 22 November 1912 in Miami County, Ohio and died of pulmonary tuberculosis at age 29 on 6 January 1942 in Dayton State Hospital, Montgomery County, Ohio where she was a patient. She was buried 10 January 1942 in Harris Creek Cemetery, Newberry Township, Miami County. Irene married and divorced Carl HARMAN between 1930 and 1940.

               569    vii.    Woodrow Wilson COOK was born 21 September 1914 in Potsdam, Miami County, Ohio. He died 25 April 1987 in Miami County at age 72, and was buried in Harris Creek Cemetery, Newberry Township, Miami County. Woodrow  married first Mary Lucille EVILSIZOR 2 August 1949 in New Castle, Henry County, Indiana. Mary, the daughter of Marshall and Lida Maude (Foose) Evilsizor, was born 13 April 1919 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio and died 8 January 1963 in Montgomery County, Ohio at age 43. She was buried in Harris Creek Cemetery. Woodrow and Mary had two daughters. On 8 August 1963 Woodrow married second Betty J. PONCHOT, the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth (Derrick) Ponchot, who was born in 1924 in Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky and died 7 June 1987 at age 63 in Miami County. She was buried in Harris Creek Cemetery.

               570    viii.    Henry Harrison COOK was born 7 May 1916 in Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio and died 12 January 1994 at age 77 in Montgomery County, Ohio. Henry married Constance E. YORK 1 October 1949 in New Castle, Henry County, Indiana. She was born 27 July 1924 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, the daughter of Clarence William and Edna Sophia (Frewert) York, and died 10 February 2004 in Montgomery County at age 79. Henry and Constance were buried in Woodland Cemetery, Dayton. They had three children.

               571     ix.    Lawrence Edward COOK was born 27 February 1919 in Shelby County, Ohio. He died 3 December 1992 in Bradford, Miami County, Ohio at age 73, and was buried in Harris Creek Cemetery, Newberry Township, Miami County. Lawrence was married twice and had two known children.

               572      x.    Oran Everett COOK was born 21 February 1923 in Bradford, Miami County, Ohio and died 26 February 2007 in Piqua, Miami County at age 84. He was buried in Harris Creek Cemetery, Newberry Township, Miami County. On 1 February 1946 in Piqua Oran married June A. PALSGROVE, the daughter of Francis Floyd and Minnie (Bucholtz) Palsgrove. She was born 1 May 1923 in Bradford, Miami County and died 1 June 2007 in Piqua at age 84. June was buried in Harris Grove Cemetery. The couple had a daughter.

 

     402.  Mary Elizabeth Caroline7 VANCE (John Clarence6, Mary Jane5 Sapp, Mary Apt4 Krouskop, George3, Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born 31 July 1891 in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio. She died of an intestinal obstruction and pulmonary embolism during a hernia operation 15 July 1951 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio at age 59, and was buried 19 July 1951 in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery and Mausoleum, Sylvania, Lucas County.

     Mary was admitted to the Miami County Children's Home 12 June 1894. She was taken on trial by Joseph Franklin Hill Darnell of Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio and indentured to him. Mary was discharged from the Children’s Home 6 February 1896 and was enumerated, along with sister Learna, in the Darnell household in the 1900 federal census for Clinton Township, Shelby County. In the 1910 federal census she and son William G. Vance were with Joseph Darnell and wife in Bartlow Township, Henry County Ohio. Next door was Urastus [sic] Fredrick and his wife Mary J., the grandparents of Mary's future husband.

      On 29 June 1910 in Henry County Mary married first Orestus J. FREDRICK, the son of James Leroy and Ida Antoinette (Brown) Fredrick. He was born 15 November 1891 in Henry County and died of a coronary thrombosis 24 November 1952 in Rossford, Wood County, Ohio at age 61. Orestus was buried in Fort Meigs Cemetery, Perrysburg, Wood County. Some time between 1921 and 1925 Mary and Orestus divorced and he married second Alice L. [--?--] who was born circa 1905 in Indiana and died in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio 27 August 1982.

     Mary married second William Elmer DODDS 30 December 1926 in Lucas County. He was born 16 February 1894 in Benton Township, Osage County, Missouri and was the son of William J. and Susan E. (Stephens) Dodds. Elmer, as he was known, married first Bertha E. Hillard 16 October 1918 in Lucas County. She was born 16 April 1899 in Ohio, the daughter of Edward F. and Dora (Condin) Hillard. Elmer, a packer-checker for Kaiser Jeep Corporation for 41 years, died 20 September 1973 in Toledo at age 79, and was buried 24 September 1973 in Hockman Cemetery, McClure, Henry County. He was survived by a wife Mildred.

     Known child of Mary Elizabeth Caroline7 VANCE and unknown father was:

               573       i.    William G.8 VANCE was born 8 February 1909 in Ohio. He died 9 December 1982 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio at age 73, and was buried 13 December 1982 in Forest Cemetery, Toledo. William was a dockhand for Great Lakes Terminal Warehouse for 22 years. He married Virginia M. WALTERS, the daughter of Virgil Charles and Dorothy (Sharp) Walters, and had nine children. Virginia was born 6 May 1921 in Toledo and died there 9 June 2004 at age 83. She was buried in Forest Cemetery.

               574       i.    Florence Irine Rozella8 FREDRICK was born 25 April 1911 in Deshler, Henry County, Ohio and died there of bronchitis 13 June 1911. She was buried 14 June 1911 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Deshler.

               575      ii.    Ledora May FREDRICK was born 28 May 1912 in Liberty Center, Henry County, Ohio and died 21 February 1985 in Perrysburg, Wood County, Ohio at age 72. She was buried 24 February 1985 in Troy Township Cemetery, Luckey, Wood County. Ledora married Frederick A. THOMPSON, Jr., 4 June 1928 in Bowling Green, Wood County. He was born 23 August 1909 in South Dakota, the son of Frederick, Sr., and Maude (Alwood) Thompson, and died 13 November 1989 in Maumee, Lucas County, Ohio at age 80. The couple had five children.

               576      iii.    Beatrice Marie FREDRICK was born 26 December 1914 in Liberty Center, Henry County, Ohio. She died of measles 27 April 1915 in Liberty Center, and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Deshler, Henry County.

               577     iv.    Clarence Virgil FREDRICK was born 13 June 1916 in Liberty Center, Henry County, Ohio and died 17 February 2001 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio at age 84. He married Dorothy G. [--?--] who was born 22 October 1917 and died 24 June 2004 at age 86. Her last known residence was Sylvania, Lucas County.

               578      v.    Pauline June FREDRICK was born 20 June 1918 in Wood County, Ohio and married Carl Marvin WILSON circa 1939. She died 15 March 1985 in Sylvania, Lucas County, Ohio at age 66, and was buried 20 March 1985 in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery and Mausoleum in Sylvania. Carl was born 30 July 1916 in Sylvania, the son of George Arthur and Edna (Heath) Wilson. He died at age 57 on 27 June 1974 in Owosso, Shiawassee County, Michigan. The couple had three children.

     There were no known children of Mary Elizabeth Caroline7 Vance and William Elmer Dodds.

 

     403.  Learna Ellen7 VANCE (John Clarence6, Mary Jane5 Sapp, Mary Apt4 Krouskop, George3, Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born 23 December 1888 in Springhills, Champaign County, Ohio. She died of a cerebral hemorrhage 10 November 1949 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio at age 60, and was buried 14 November 1949 in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery and Mausoleum, Sylvania, Lucas County.

     Learna was admitted to the Miami County Children's Home 12 June 1894. Comments in her record say that her father John C. Vance was living in Piqua and her mother was dead. She was surrendered to her father in Piqua and then readmitted to the Children’s Home. Learna was taken on trial by Lafayette Grice of Pleasant Hill, Miami County, Ohio, followed by William E. Davis of Covington, Miami County. Finally she was taken on trial by Joseph Franklin Hill Darnell of Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio.  Learna was discharged 18 March 1897 from the Miami County Children's Home. In the 1900 census she and sister Mary Elizabeth Caroline were enumerated in the Darnell home in Clinton Township, Shelby County.

     Circa 1907 Ellen, as she was commonly called, married Frank Sloan CRAIG, the son of William and Rebecca (Sloan) Craig and brother of Grant Craig who married Ellen’s sister Mellie Grace (see #400 above). Frank was born 6 February 1880 in Switzerland County, Indiana. Ellen and Frank became residents of Toledo by 1923, according to her obituary. They were listed in the city directory together in that year and in 1924. In the 1925 Toledo Directory Frank was listed but Ellen was not named. In 1926 Ellen was listed as widow of Frank, but he was not actually deceased as Frank and son William were enumerated in the 1930 census in Toledo in the household of John and Alice Busby. Frank’s marital status was married. Ellen and their other children cannot be located in the1930 census. Frank was a farmhand in Martin, Ottawa County, Ohio in 1942 for the World War II draft registration. His son William was listed as the person who would always know where he was. Although Ellen’s death certificate gave her marital status as married, it might be assumed from the previous information that she and Frank were separated, if not divorced, for a number of years. Frank died 6 January 1966 at age 85 in Toledo.

     Known children of Learna Ellen7 VANCE and Frank S. CRAIG were as follows:

               579       i.    Adeline M.8 CRAIG was born circa 1909 in Miami County, Ohio. She was not married at the time of her mother's death in 1949, and lived in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.

               580      ii.    William F. CRAIG was born 31 May 1911 in Miami County, Ohio. He died 30 September 1987 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio at age 76.

               581      iii.    Della G. CRAIG was born 25 May 1915 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio and circa 1936 married first Francis D. HENKE, the son of Frank R. and Margaret (Maguire) Henke, who was born 1 May 1905 in Lorain County, Ohio. The couple had a daughter and divorced. Francis remarried and died 9 January 1963 at age 57 in Elyria, Lorain County. Della married second Albert MORI. The son of Albert and Anna (Bori) Mori, he was born 4 November 1902 in Lorain County and died there 17 November 1980 at age 78. Della died 14 September 1986 in Amherst Township, Lorain County at age 72, and was buried 16 September 1986 in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst, Lorain County.

               582     iv.    Irene B. CRAIG was born 14 July 1919 in Ohio and married Earl LeRoy CUNNINGHAM circa 1937. He was born circa 1912 in Ohio, the son of Aden J., Jr., and Emily (Strudwick) Cunningham, and died 16 November 1965 in Oregon, Lucas County, Ohio. Irene died 13 February 2008 in Florida at age 88. Her last known address was Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida.

     404.  Curtis7 VANCE (John Clarence6, Mary Jane5 Sapp, Mary Apt4 Krouskop, George3, Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born 22 September 1896 in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio. He died 6 August 1990 in Troy, Miami County at age 93, and was buried 9 August 1990 in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township, Miami County.

     On 2 March 1918 in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio Curtis married Lyda PENNY, the daughter of Sylvester Henry and Martha Elizabeth (Lamsdale) Penny, who was born 10 April 1896 in Newton Township, Miami County. She died of uremia 14 July 1965 in Troy, at age 69, and was buried 17 July 1965 in Curtis Cemetery. Curtis, Lyda and family resided in Butler Township, Montgomery County, Ohio.

               585       i.    Carl Cecil8 VANCE was born 28 December 1918 in Nashville, Miami County, Ohio and died 10 October 1997 in Troy, Miami County at age 78. He was buried 14 October 1997 in Polk Grove Cemetery, Vandalia, Montgomery County, Ohio. Carl, a plumber, married Charlotte Emma LEHWALD 3 July 1942 in Dayton, Montgomery County. She was born 3 February 1922 in Dayton, the daughter of Paul and Glenna Eleanor (Berg) Lehwald. Charlotte died 3 December 2003 at age 81 in Miami County, and was buried 8 December 2003 in Polk Grove Cemetery. The couple had three daughters, one of whom was stillborn.

               586      ii.    Earl Henry VANCE, known as Bud, married 18 October 1941 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio Evelyn SWADNER. Born 19 September 1921 in Dayton, she was the daughter of Roy Lesher and Clara May (Tingle) Swadner and sister of Harold Swadner who married Bud’s sister Mary (see #591 below). Evelyn died 1 June 2006 in Florida at age 84, and was buried in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Sumter County, Florida. The couple had three children.

               587      iii.    John Clarence VANCE was born 25 September 1922 in Butler Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. He died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident 24 July 1947 in Dayton, Montgomery County at age 24, and was buried 27 July 1947 in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township, Miami County, Ohio.

               588     iv.    Pauline Lucille VANCE married Harold Edgar BAREFOOT. The couple had one daughter.

               589      v.    Dorothy Marie VANCE married Herbert Franklin RHOADES 26 April 1947 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. Dusty, as he was called, was born 31 July 1919 in Preble County, Ohio, the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Lang) Rhoades, and died of a heart attack 24 February 1983 in West Milton, Miami County, Ohio at age 63. He was buried 28 February 1983 in Arlington Cemetery, Clay Township, Montgomery County. Dorothy and Dusty had two children.

               590     vi.    Robert Eugene VANCE married 24 April 1954 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio Margaret Lucille MILLER, the daughter of Charles Haines and Marie (Good) Miller. She was born 29 December 1933 in Dayton and died of breast cancer in Miami County, Ohio 5 December 2002 at age 68.  Margaret was buried 9 December 2002 in Forest Hills Cemetery, Butler Township, Montgomery County. The couple had a son.

               591    vii.    Mary Elizabeth VANCE married Harold Lockwood SWADNER 24 April 1981 in Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio.  Harold was born 30 May 1919 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio and was the son of Roy Lesher and Clara May (Tingle) Swadner. His sister Evelyn married Mary’s brother Earl (see #586 above).  Harold, a mechanic, died 7 May 2006 at age 86, and was buried in Dayton Memorial Park. He married first 13 December 1941 in Dayton Mary Jane Myers who died 27 June 1971. They had a son Sam, born 11 September 1942 and died 9 November 1944 at age 2.  Harold married second Phyllis Clark 17 November 1973 in Dayton. They divorced 29 December 1975.

               592    viii.    Victor Norman VANCE married Georgia Alberta LOVETT. The couple had three children.

               593     ix.    Donald Lee VANCE was born 1 September 1934 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio and died 17 January 2005 in Troy, Miami County, Ohio at age 70. He was cremated and his remains interred in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township, Miami County. Donald married first 1 June 1957 in Tipp City, Miami County Mary Francis WALTERS who was born 20 January 1937. The couple had four children and divorced circa 1965. Mary married second Rex Hefelfinger and died 7 December 1995 at age 58. Donald married second 19 September 1969 Evangeline BEATTY and had a daughter. The couple divorced in March 1974.

               594      x.    Curtis VANCE, Jr., married Mildred M. KRYMAN 16 September 1960 in St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida. Mildred, the daughter of William Frederick and Mildred Marie (Castner) Kryman, was born 11 July 1939 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York and married first Charles Dean by whom she had a daughter. Curtis and Mildred had three children and divorced 14 May 1980 in Troy, Miami County, Ohio. She married third Carl Dwight Lacey 2 July 1990 in Ohio and died 18 July 2003 at age 64 in Miami County. Mildred was buried in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens, Tipp City, Miami County. Curtis married second Maria Antonia CACCIATORE 6 February 1982 in Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida.

               595     xi.    Dean Richard VANCE married Shirley Alice PRICE and had two children.

               596    xii.    Patricia Irene VANCE married Dale NORTH 26 September 1959 in Tipp City, Miami County , Ohio and had four children. Dale was born 21 May 1934 in Lathrop, Athens County, Ohio, the son of Andrew Jackson and Mary Ellen (Hill) North. He died from complications of diabetes 13 March 2001 at age 66 in Miami County, and was buried 16 March 2001 in Miami Memorial Park, Covington, Miami County.

 

     405.  James Henry7 VANCE (John Clarence6, Mary Jane5 Sapp, Mary Apt4 Krouskop, George3, Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born 19 March 1898 in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio. He died 15 February 1966 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 67, and was buried 17 February 1966 in Riverside Cemetery, West Milton, Miami County.

     Jim, as he was known, married Helen F. GEBHART 17 June 1919. She was born 24 November 1900 in Dayton, the daughter of Dovillo and Elizabeth Harriet (Riddle) Gebhart, and died 25 February 1968 in Montgomery County at age 67. Helen was buried 28 February 1968 in Riverside Cemetery.

     Known children of James Henry7 VANCE and Helen F. GEBHART, all born in Montgomery County, Ohio, were as follows:

               597       i.    Dovillo James8 VANCE was born 8 January 1921 and died 5 October 2002 in Missouri at age 81. He was buried in Protem Cemetery, Protem, Taney County, Missouri. Dovey, as he was called, married Esther Dorothy EBERHARD 20 February 1944 and they had three children.

               598      ii.    Marian Arlene VANCE was born 8 July 1923. She died 29 December 1996 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 73, and was buried 3 January 1997 in Riverside Cemetery, West Milton, Miami County, Ohio. Marian married 5 November 1944 John Martin BURKE, the son of Alfred and Florence Burke, who was born 25 December 1924 in Arcanum, Darke County, Ohio. He died 25 December 1996 in Dayton at age 72, and was buried 28 December 1996 in Riverside Cemetery. Marian and John had three children.

               599      iii.    Edna Marie VANCE was born 23 October 1925 and died 21 February 1992 in West Milton, Miami County , Ohio at age 66. She was buried 25 February 1992 in Riverside Cemetery in West Milton. Edna married Wilbur R. MINKNER and they had three children.

               600     iv.    Anna Elizabeth VANCE was born 11 July 1927 and married Jerome MEICHER, the son of William and Seraphine Meicher, who was born 29 February 1920 in Prairie du Sac, Sauk County, Wisconsin and died 10 January 1984 in Montgomery County, Ohio at age 63. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery, West Milton, Miami County, Ohio. Anna died 4 July 2000 in Montgomery County at age 72, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery. The couple had a daughter.

               601      v.    Paul Lynn VANCE was born 17 May 1930 and died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident 22 September 1997 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 67. He was buried 26 September 1997 in Riverside Cemetery, West Milton, Miami County , Ohio. Paul married first Marilyn Juanita PFEIFFER and second Mary Ann NISWONGER who was married previously to Gary Roush. After Paul’s death Mary Ann married Millard Mikel. Paul and Marilyn had four children.

               602     vi.    Dale Raymond VANCE was born 2 February 1932. He died 26 February 2006 in Ottawa County, Ohio at age 74 and was buried in Oak Harbor Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor, Ottawa County. Dale operated a campground in Port Clinton, Ottawa County. He married 10 May 1955 in Babbes Point, Oahu, Hawaii Barbara May GEMIN, the daughter of John O. and Selma (Penny) Gemin, who was born 5 July 1935 in Montgomery County, Ohio. She died in Ottawa County 20 June 2004 at age 68, and was buried in Oak Harbor Cemetery. The couple had three daughters.

 

     406.  Elsie Jane7 VANCE (John Clarence6, Mary Jane5 Sapp, Mary Apt4 Krouskop, George3, Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born 4 February 1900 in West Virginia. Her death certificate gives 1901 as the year of her birth, however she was in the 1900 census. It also incorrectly gives her father's name as James Vance. She died of acute pulmonary edema, congestive heart failure 23 January 1972 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 71, and was buried 27 January 1972 in Highland Cemetery, West Milton, Miami County, Ohio.

     On 24 May 1922 in Ohio Elsie married Gainor Jennings WEAVER, the son of Jacob O. and Emma A. (Shelly) Weaver, who was born 12 May 1896 in Union Township, Miami County, Ohio. He died 8 July 1960 in Dayton at age 64, and was buried in Highland Cemetery.

     Known children of Elsie Jane7 VANCE and Gainor Jennings WEAVER were:

               603       i.    Kenneth Lee8 WEAVER was born 22 September 1922 in Montgomery County, Ohio and married Martha Lee MARTIN. He died 30 July 1975 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio at age 52. The couple had five children.

 

     407.  Edna Marie7 VANCE (John Clarence6, Mary Jane5 Sapp, Mary Apt4 Krouskop, George3, Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born 15 July 1901 in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio and died 11 November 1923 in West Milton, Miami County , Ohio at age 22. The cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage an hour after giving birth to a baby boy. She was buried 14 November 1923 in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township, Miami County.

     Edna married 31 January 1918 in Miami County Frank Parker APPLEGATE, the son of Stephen Herbert and Emma Alice (Kessler) Applegate. He was born 9 June 1897 in West Milton. After Edna’s death Frank married circa 1924 Pauline Delores Gibson, the daughter of James Blaine and Maud A. (Young) Gibson, who was born 15 November 1907 in Darke County, Ohio. Frank, an employee of City Transit Company in Dayton for 32 years, died 19 February 1965 in Montgomery County, Ohio at age 67 and Pauline died there 14 May 1987 at age 79. Both were buried in Bear Creek Cemetery, Drexel, Montgomery County.

     Known children of Edna Marie7 VANCE and Frank P. APPLEGATE, all born in West Milton, Miami County, Ohio, were as follows:

               604       i.    Glenn M.8 APPLEGATE was born 16 September 1919. He died 13 September 1992 in Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida at age 73, and was buried 22 September 1992 in Minnich Cemetery, Union, Montgomery County, Ohio. Glenn married Sidney [--?--] and had three children.

               605      ii.    Leroy E. APPLEGATE was born 15 July 1921 and died in West Milton, Miami County, Ohio 7 May 1927 at age 5. The cause of death was acute septicemia from a burn on his right hip and buttock. He was buried 9 May 1927 in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township, Miami County, Ohio.

               606      iii.    Virgil E. APPLEGATE was born 11 November 1923. He died in West Milton, Miami County, Ohio 16 November 1923 and was buried in Curtis Cemetery, Union Township, Miami County, Ohio.

 

     409.  Gilbert Clarence7 SHELKETT (Olive C.6 Vance, Mary Jane5 Sapp, Mary Apt4 Krouskop, George3, Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born 5 June 1888 in Champaign County, Ohio, and married Stella May ALLEN 17 June 1914 in Manhattan, Riley County, Kansas. He died 7 March 1952 in Ellsworth County, Kansas at age 63, and was buried in Ellsworth Cemetery.

     Before going to Kansas Gilbert was in Minnesota, according to the Kansas State Census Collection 1855-1925. He was in Salina, Saline County, Kansas for the 1917-1918 World War I Draft Registration and worked as a lather and shingler. In the 1920 federal census he and his family were enumerated in Topeka Township, Shawnee County, Kansas, but by 1930 were in Ellsworth Township, Ellsworth County.

     Stella was born 13 May 1891 in Ellsworth County, the daughter of Charles Whitmee and Dorothy Ann (Carney) Allen. She died 23 November 1966 in that county at age 75, and was buried in Ellsworth Cemetery.

     Known children of Gilbert Clarence7 SHELKETT and Stella May ALLEN, all born in Ellsworth County, Kansas, were as follows:

               607       i.    Clarence Allen8 SHELKETT was born 1 October 1915. He died 10 July 1981 at age 65, and was buried in Ellsworth Cemetery, Ellsworth, Elsworth County, Kansas. The Social Security Death Index and his mother’s obituary gave his name as C. Allen.

               608      ii.    Dorothy Virginia SHELKETT was born 3 June 1917 and died 10 March 1983 in Ellsworth, Ellsworth County, Kansas at age 65. On 14 September 1937 in Ellsworth County she married Steve TRUHLAR, Jr., who was born 12 December 1912 in Kansas. He died 24 July 1991 in Ellsworth at age 78.

               609      iii.    Robert SHELKETT, known as Bobby, was born 14 November 1922. He died 9 August 1938 in Ellsworth, Ellsworth County, Kansas at age 15, and was buried in Ellsworth Cemetery.

 

     410.  Nellie I.7 LARIMORE (Ida Isola6 Costin, Francinah E.5 Sapp, Mary Apt4 Krouskop, George3, Johann George2, Johann Georg1) was born in July 1892 in Logan County, Ohio. She died in 1971 in Logan County at age 79, and was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery, Lake Township, Logan County.

    Nellie married first Edward W. BRUNDIGE 22 March 1911 in Logan County. He was born 3 February 1889 in Ashley, Delaware County, Ohio, the son of William and Mary (Price) Brundige. Nellie and Edward divorced circa 1921 and he married second Arvilla Woodward who was born 26 August 1888 and died 19 February 1968 in Franklin County, Ohio at age 79. Edward died of tuberculosis 10 March 1936 in Sharon Township, Franklin County at age 47, and was buried 13 March 1936 in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Columbus, Franklin County.

     On 2 September 1923 in Logan County Nellie married second Myron F. MOHR. The son of Frank and Anna D. (Maier) Mohr, he was born 7 December 1898 in Logan County and died in November 1975 in Bellefontaine at age 76. Myron was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery.

     Known child of Nellie I.7 LARIMORE and Edward W. BRUNDIGE was:

               610       i.    Edward E.8 BRUNDIGE was born 17 March 1912 in Logan County, Ohio. He died in January 1984 in Arkansas at age 71.

     Known child of Nellie I.7 LARIMORE and Myron F. MOHR was:
