Descendants of John McClain

Generation One

     1.  John1 MCCLAIN was born 3 March 1803 in Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth MAULLER, daughter of William Mauller and Mary [--?--], circa 1823 in Pennsylvania, likely Fayette County in the southwestern part of the state. John died 20 October 1869 in Grant County, Indiana at age 66, and was buried in Point Isabel Cemetery in that county.

The McClains were said to be of Scotch-Irish extraction.  Supposedly they settled in New England and the eastern states in colonial days, and fought in the Revolutionary War.

Not long after they married, John and Elizabeth migrated to Perry County, in southeastern Ohio, settling first in Pike Township. On 30 April 1831 John purchased 76.46 acres of land in Salt Lick Township in Perry County for $95.58 (west half of northwest quarter of Section 24, Township 14, Range 15). His last name was spelled McLean on the land patent granted 2 April 1833. John added to his holdings by purchasing an additional 38.23 acres of land for $47.78 on 25 August 1832 (northeast quarter of northwest quarter of Section 24, Township 14, Range 15). The land patent for this land was granted 14 September 1835, and his last name, with signature, was spelled McLane. John's final purchase of land in Perry County was 27 December 1833 (southeast quarter of northwest quarter of Section 24, Township 14, Range 15).He bought 38.23 acres for $47.78, the land patent for which was granted 5 October 1835. John's name and signature show the spelling of his surname as yet another variation: McLain. In the census of 1840 John and family, with last name spelled a fourth variation, McClain, resided on the land he purchased in Salt Lick Township, Perry County. Around 1846 they moved from that location to Grant County, Indiana. John purchased 160 acres in Green Township that was part of land acquired by treaty from the Miami Indians and made available to settlers. He started a factory to manufacture wooden bowls, it being the first machinery set in motion in Green Township. John also operated a sawmill and still house. According to Past and Present of Randolph County, Indiana, pages 1080-1082, John McLain [sic] “was a manufacturer of wooden bowls and these he peddled over the country from his wagon. He became quite a prominent citizen of Grant County.” The same passage says that his father, William McLain, was a woodworker by trade in 1846. This researcher has yet to find any documents confirming that John's father was William. His mother's name also has not been confirmed.

John's wife Elizabeth MAULLER was born 22 June 1803 in Pennsylvania. She died 20 October 1863 at age 60 in Grant County, and was buried in Point Isabel Cemetery. The Mauller/Mauler/Mawler name is said to be Dutch. Census and tax records for Fayette County, Pennsylvania place a Conrad Mauller family there in 1800, and a William Mauller was listed on the 1810 census for that county. In 1820 William was joined by a Mathias Mauller, and by 1830 both had left Pennsylvania and were in Perry County, Ohio. Since John McClain and his wife Elizabeth were living in Perry County by 1830, it is strongly suspected that Elizabeth is tied to these particular Mauller, but no documentation proving this connection has been found.

Aaron, Cornelius and Stephen Mawler [sic] were in Salt Lick Township, Perry County in the 1840 census, living in close proximity to the John McClain household. In the 1850 census Cornelius was again enumerated in Perry County, but Aaron and Seth were in Green Township, Grant County, Indiana. Seth Mauler [sic], age 28, a farmer born in Pennsylvania, his wife Ursula, age 23, born in Ohio, and their two children Mary J., age 3, and John W., age 8 months, both born in Indiana, were living next door to John and Elizabeth McClain. Ten families away was Aaron Mauler [sic], age 40, born in Pennsylvania. With him was wife Phoebe, age 38, born in Pennsylvania and children Hannah, age 12, born in Pennsylvania; William M., age 10, born in Ohio; Sarah A., age 8, born in Ohio; Martha, age 6, born in Ohio; Elizabeth, age 5, born in Indiana, James H., age 3, born in Indiana; Rebecca M., age 2, born in Indiana; and Harriet, age 6 months, born in Indiana. Again, no documents have been found proving the relationship of Elizabeth to the Mauller families residing in Grant County, Indiana, but it is certain they were connected.

John McClain was a member of the Church of God (Christian Church), organized in 1856, and one of its first trustees. The 1860 census, the last in which he was enumerated, showed him with real estate valued at $6000 and personal property valued at $1500, considerable sums of money for that time.

Known children of John1 MCCLAIN and Elizabeth MAULLER were as follows:

2       i.    Rachel2 MCCLAIN was born 25 May 1824 in Ohio. She died 10 February 1900 in Greenwood, Vernon County, Wisconsin at age 75, and was buried in Debello Cemetery, Hillsboro, Vernon County.

Rachel married 29 October 1848 in Grant County, Indiana William JORDAN, the son of Moses W. and Mary (Shaner) Jordan, who was born circa 1825 in Pennsylvania. On 7 November 1849 William purchased 160 acres in Liberty Township in Grant County, but in the 1850 census was enumerated with Rachel in Mill Township in that county, close to Rachel's sister Sarah and her husband Alexander Jordan, likely William's brother. By 1860 William and Rachel resided in Greenwood, Bad Ax County, Wisconsin (later Vernon County). With them was William Bower, age 5, born in Wisconsin, who they adopted and who, as William Henry Jordan, died 4 November 1879 at age 24 years, 7 months and 13 days, and was buried next to Rachel and William in Debello Cemetery. Rachel and William also adopted a daughter Henrietta, born circa 1868 in Wisconsin, and a son Otto B., born in January 1873 in Wisconsin who married Lucy Stockwell circa 1902. William's date of death is not known, but his headstone at Debello Cemetery has a Civil War veteran marker. He served in Company B, 12th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry.

+   3      ii.    Nancy MCCLAIN, born in 1827 in Ohio; married Sebastian SILBAUGH.

4      iii.    William MCCLAIN was born between 1826 and 1829 in Ohio, likely Perry County, and per his brother John's will was deceased by 1868. Little further is known about him except that he had at least one child, James Buchanan McClain, born 27 December 1856 and died 8 July 1876 at age 19 after being kicked by a horse. He was buried in Point Isabel Cemetery, Grant County, Indiana. James supposedly was raised by William's brother James M. McClain and his wife Mary Jane, but was not enumerated in the 1860 or 1870 federal censuses in their household.

+   5     iv.    Sarah Fair MCCLAIN, born 26 July 1830 in Perry County, Ohio; married Alexander JORDAN.

+   6      v.    James M. MCCLAIN, born 29 April 1832 in Perry County, Ohio; married Mary Jane HOWARD.

+   7     vi.    Susanna MCCLAIN, born 18 December 1833 in Perry County, Ohio; married James KELLEY.

+   8    vii.    Harriet MCCLAIN, born 10 June 1834 in Perry County, Ohio; married Benjamin Franklin LEWELLEN.

+   9    viii.    Elizabeth Margaret MCCLAIN, born 14 September 1836 in Perry County, Ohio; married John B. HANNAH.

+   10     ix.    Eliza Jane MCCLAIN, born 9 February 1838 in Perry County, Ohio; married Arthur HANNAH.

11      x.    John J. MCCLAIN was born 8 January 1841 in Perry County, Ohio.  In August 1862 he enlisted in the Union Army in Company H, 101st Indiana Infantry along with his cousin William Mauller, son of Aaron, and Arthur Hannah, the husband of his sister Eliza Jane. He was mustered out of service in May 1863 following heavy fighting in Kentucky and near Nashville, Tennessee. John did not marry and died 20 June 1868 in Grant County, Indiana at age 27. He was buried in Point Isabel Cemetery, Grant County. In Wills of Grant County, Indiana, Will Book 1, page 311, is the last will and testament of John J., dated 5 May 1868 and probated 7 July 1868. Mary Jane Boal, no legal heir, received an equal share with John's brothers and sisters. Sister Harriet Lewellen was given fifty dollars more than any of the other brothers and sisters, and John's father was bequeathed five dollars. The remainder of John's property, both real and personal, was divided equally among Mary Jane Boal, Rachel Jordan, Nancy Silbaugh, William McClain (deceased) heirs, Sarah Jordan, James McClain, Harriet Lewellen, Susan Kelley, Elizabeth M. Hannah, Eliza Jane Hannah (deceased) heirs, Thomas O. McClain, and Sophia Mendenhall. Executors of the estate were brothers-in-law James Kelley and John B. Hannah, and witnesses were W. D. Westerfield and David Hannah. The Mary Jane Boal bequeathed in John's will was Mary Jane McClain who married Archibald Boal 26 March 1840 in Perry County, Ohio. She was born in January 1822 in Pennsylvania and was perhaps an aunt of John's. In the 1850 federal census Mary Jane and her husband and one-year-old daughter were living in Salt Lick Township, Perry County, Ohio, the township in which John and Elizabeth McClain and family lived before moving to Grant County, Indiana circa 1846, next to the William Boles [sic] family (he age 28) and the John Boles [sic] family (he age 58), and just two families away from Philip and Jane Silbaugh (he age 65), the parents of Sebastian Silbaugh who married John McClain's sister Nancy. In the 1860 and 1870 censuses Archibald and Mary Jane and family still resided in Salt Lick Township. By 1880 they were in Falls Township, Hocking County, Ohio. Archibald, who was born 4 July 1820 in Washington County, Ohio, died 29 December 1894 in Hocking County at age 74. Mary Jane died 11 February 1903 in Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio at age 81.

+   12     xi.    Thomas O. MCCLAIN, born 20 June 1842 in Perry County, Ohio; married Rachel Ann ECHELBERGER; married Elizabeth Jane QUICK.

14    xiii.    Mary Elizabeth MCCLAIN was born 27 December 1852 in Grant County, Indiana and married Albert Marion HIGHT 15 December 1877 in that county. He was born 9 April 1840 in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky, the son of Jacob and Sarah (Penn) Hight, and served in Co K, Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. The couple had a son James Arthur Garfield, known as Garfield, who was born 24 June 1881 in Miami County, Indiana and died 26 November 1968 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana at age 87, who married first circa 1905 Sarah Elizabeth JAMESON, the daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth Jameson. Sarah was born in April 1886 in Indiana and died 23 April 1907 in Miami County at age 21. Their daughter was Ethel May, born 4 September 1906 and died 15 July 1987 in Miami County at age 90, who lived with her Jameson grandmother after the death of her mother and married Charles O. SUTTON in 1927. Garfield married second 23 October 1910 in Miami County Laura Louise BIGGER, the daughter of John Hamilton and Harriet (Stover) Bigger, who was born 14 December 1889 in Indiana and died at age 89 on 16 October 1979. Garfield and Louise had children Charles Arthur, born 10 January 1912 and died in Indiana 2 March 1989 at age 77, who married Marjorie Irene SHAW; Dorothy E., born circa 1914; Glenn Marion, born 12 March 1916 and died 11 June 1985 in Indiana at age 69, who married  Norma Marie DILLEY; Raymond Paul, born 5 June 1919 and died 18 May 2008 at age 88 in Polk County, Florida, who married Myldred Nan WATSON; Edith L.; Estol Warren, born 11 December 1922 and died 14 July 2000 in Clay County, Indiana at age 77; Donald Wayne, born 30 April 1924 and died 5 June 1985 in Johnson County, Indiana at age 61; Ora Gene, born 17 August 1927 and died 24 August 2007 in Johnson County, Indiana at age 80, who was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery there; Basil Vern, born 4 January 1930 and died 12 December 1991 at age 61 in Los Angeles County, California; and James Arthur Garfield, Jr. Albert and Elizabeth also had twin sons Thomas B. and William Henry, born 9 June 1884, who both died in that month, as well as a daughter Rosa May, born in May 1886, who married Solomon Sylvester RAVER 26 July 1901 in Miami County. Solomon was born 12 November 1877 in that county, the son of  William and Lydia (Morningstar) Raver, and died in Peru, Miami County in 1952 at age 75. Both he and Rosa, who died at age 72 in 1958, were buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Peru. Their children were Ralph L., born 16 January 1902 and died in December 1982 in Peru at age 80; Harold Arthur, Sr., born in 1904 and died 17 September 1951 at age 47; Mildred, born circa 1908; Donald S., born 24 September 1914 and died 21 June 1996 in Fort Myers, Lee County, Florida at age 81; Eileen M.; and Rosemary. Francis Hight, who was enumerated in the household of Albert and Mary in the 1910 federal census, may have been Mary's son out-of-wedlock based on his birthdate of 19 March 1873, four years before the couple married. Known as Frank, he died in May 1943 in Miami County at age 70. In the 1930 federal census he was enumerated as single and an inmate in the Miami County Infirmary in Washington Township. Albert died 1 December 1887 in Miami County at age 47 and was buried in Springdale Cemetery, Bunker Hill, Miami County. Mary died at age 61 on 25 July 1914 in Peru.

Generation Two

     3.  Nancy 2 MCCLAIN (John1) was born in 1827 in Ohio, likely Perry County, and died 8 August 1880 in Henrietta Township, Richland  County, Wisconsin. She married first 14 January 1847 in Perry County Sebastian SILBAUGH.

Sebastian was born in 1826 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the son of Philip and Jane (Tissue) Silbaugh of Somerset County, Pennsylvania.  Philip and Jane moved west with their family from Somerset County to Fayette County some time before 1810.  Here they resided until about 1835 before moving with their eight children to Straightsville, Salt Lick Township, Perry County, Ohio. By 1850 they were in Hocking County, Ohio. Circa 1855 Philip, Jane and their children and their spouses, including Sebastian and Nancy, moved again to Vernon County, Wisconsin.  Asbury Ridge was chosen as the site for the family's new home and it was in Asbury Ridge Cemetery that many Silbaughs, including Nancy and Sebastian, were buried. Tragically Nancy and Sebastian lost four of their children – George, Elizabeth, Etta and Jonathan –  in 1867, and two children – Edward and Rachel –  in 1871. It would appear their deaths were the result of a communicable disease, perhaps typhoid or smallpox.

Sebastian died 17 September 1875 in Webster Township, Vernon County at age 49 and Nancy married second Henry TRAVERS 1 October 1878 in Richland County, Wisconsin. Henry was born 22 December 1827 in Indiana, the son of Thomas and Nancy (Simpson) Travers and widower of Sabina Bradshaw. After Nancy's death Henry married third Susan Ensey 26 December 1880. He died in 1932 at age 78 in Howard County, and was buried in Russiaville Cemetery. Jacob was the son of David and Elizabeth Kanable and brother of Martin L. Kanable who married Mary Elizabeth Jordan, Anna's sister (see #26 below). Anna and Jacob raised Lena Kanable, born in June 1893 in Indiana, who was enumerated in the 1900 federal census as adopted daughter, but in the 1910 census as niece.

He died 24 November 1904 in Sims Township, Grant County at age 72. The cause of death was softening of the brain resulting from dropsy. James was buried in Point Isabel Cemetery, Grant County. He was not a member of a church and so his funeral was held at Swayzee Methodist Protestant Church and was conducted by a former neighbor, Reverend F. O. Morris of Muncie, Indiana, assisted by Reverend J.O. Ledbetter.

James worked for about six years in his father's bowl factory, then subsequently built a bowl factory on a farm he purchased in Sims Township.  In later years he devoted himself to farming and the raising of livestock.  An avid hunter, James is credited with killing the last wild deer in Grant County.  James and his wife supposedly raised a child of his brother William, named James Buchanan McClain, born 27 December 1856 and died 8 July 1876 at age 19 after being kicked by a horse.

Mary Jane was born 16 May 1836 in Centre Township, Rush County, Indiana, the daughter of John T. and Elizabeth (Jarvis) Howard of Wilkes County, North Carolina. She died 2 June 1915 in Swayzee, Grant County at age 79, and was buried in Point Isabel Cemetery.

     8.  Harriet2 MCCLAIN (John1) was born 10 June 1834 in Perry County, Ohio. She died 29 July 1917 in Farmland, Randolph County, Indiana at age 83, and was buried 31 July 1917 in Maxville Cemetery, Randolph County.

According to Past and Present of Randolph County, Indiana, pages 1080-82, “Harriet McLain [sic] was brought by her parents to Grant county, Indiana, when she was a young girl and there she grew to womanhood and received her education in the public schools, and there she and Mr. Lewellen were married.  Grandfather William McLain was a wood worker by trade and when the family located in Grant county they found a very sparsely settled wilderness, which was still the home of Indians and the haunt of wild beasts.  Grandfather brought with him a grindstone with which to grind his tools, and the Indians often came to his shop to have their tomahawks ground, and (Harriet) would turn the crank to the grindstone for the red men, and in time she came to be a favorite with them.”

Harriet married Benjamin Franklin LEWELLEN 27 April 1852 in Grant County. Benjamin was born 9 July 1833 in Virginia, the son of William G. and Mary (Rector) Lewellen who came to Indiana around 1845. He served as a private in Company A, 84th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War, enlisting 6 August 1862. He was discharged 4 February 1863. A Declaration for Invalid Army Pension completed 8 December 1863 states that while in service at Gallipolis, Ohio on or about the 10th day of October 1861, Benjamin “was attacked with epileptic fits or spasm, which diseases continued to afflict him up to the said date of his discharge and were of so frequent occurrence as to render him entirely unfit for service. He is informed by his surgeon and believes that this disease was caused by exposure and fatigue and lying on the wet ground. He further states that up to that time he never had been afflicted by any such disease. He further states that he has since his discharge been so bad as to render him unable to labor at his usual vocation.” Before enlisting Benjamin had been a farmer and a day laborer.
