Ludwigsburg was a military station and the officers often came to eat at the tavern which was famous for its cuisine. As a young man Wilhelm worked in the shipyard. On 29 April 1854 he was issued a passport to leave for America on 30 April.  The passport read:  'in order to find work.'  He passed through France 6 May 1854. Upon arriving in the U.S., William Frederick, as he then spelled his name, settled first in Marion County, Ohio where he worked worked as a carpenter and farmer. On 10 December 1857 in Bowling Green Township, Marion County William married Marie Catharine KOPP. After the birth of their first child, William and Marie moved to a farm in Jay County, Indiana, where they lived for about 40 years.  Here he cut the trees to clear the land and planted a large orchard of apples and pears.  William built a log house with one large room and a loft which in later years was enclosed and a frame addition added.      Esther married Frederick WORTZ who was born 28 November 1828 in Wurttemberg, Germany. No record of their marriage has been located, so it is unclear if Esther was also the mother of three other of Frederick’s children: John, born in June 1855; Mary, born in 1857; and Ellen, born in August 1859. However, it seems likely she was not as she was enumerated in the household of her parents in Gibson Township, Mercer County in the 1860 federal census. His father, whose name may have been Peter, supposedly was a shepherd and worked for the government in Darmstadt, Germany. He immigrated in 1849 to USA. This date is according to his obituary.  However, it is obviously in error since military papers show Henry served in the military in Germany in 1851. He served in the military as a Musketeer War-Reservist in the Third Company, Fourth Infantry Regiment, in Germany.  He began his service 15 Jun 1850 and continued at least through 15 Dec 1851.  At the time of her death, Aunt Florence (Gimbel) Todd had Henry's original army discharge papers and death notice.  Their current location is unknown.
